BA Theatre Coursework

Our BA program serves over 250 majors, but also attracts students from the university at large. Our Introduction to Drama and the Media brings together students with business, nursing, film and cultural studies interests. Introduction to Theater regularly attracts 300 students per semester to think about how theater can transform the individual and the world. Upper level courses in history and literature investigate representation as a cultural phenomenon of great consequence. Our performance program introduces the creative process through a two-course sequence, Fundamentals of Performance and Creating the Performance.

On the intermediate and advanced levels the curriculum offers classes in directing, Stanislavski, physical theatre techniques, puppetry, musical theatre and storytelling. Our design and technology classes offer a balanced approach between traditional design craftsmanship and high technology. Students investigate scenic art, costume construction, and lighting design, but also have the opportunity to explore digital video and audio, editing and post-production for video and film, as well as multimedia production for live performance. Students have access to the latest equipment essential to learning in all areas of design and technology. We also provide a balance between the theoretical and the practical. Not only do students learn the process of creation in a class setting, but they also have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice onstage in a wide variety of productions.
